We will pick you up from your hotel. Departure at 7.00 for the more than two hour drive to Petra with many interesting photo-stops on the way. Petra has been designated as one of the modern world’s 7 Great Wonders and most people who have visited all of them will inform you without doubt that it is the greatest wonder of all of them.
This stupendous ancient city was built into the sandstone rock by the Arab Nabateans. They ruled this area from the sixth century BCE till the Roman Empire took control of the Nabatean kingdom in 106 CE. It was the Nabatean capital and their main trading centre for commerce in spices, incense, jewels, silks and all types of eastern merchandise coming via camel caravans from the south of the Arabian peninsula and from India and China via the Silk and Spice Sea Route to the trading ports of Yemen and the Gulf. Nothing can prepare you for this extraordinary ancient city’s astounding beauty. A poet has described Petra’s stones as ‘rose-red as if the blush of dawn that first beheld them were not yet withdrawn’ but Petra’s rocks and colours are of every shade and form imaginable. It is the combination of the beauty of the sandstone surfaces and man’s architectural designs and carving upon them that make Petra the most astonishing of the world’s many archaeological remains. The walk through the Siq, the narrow canyon leading to Petra’s most famous facade, the Khazneh (or Treasury) is just the beginning of your exploration of this broadly extended ancient city. Your guide will take you to the many superb sights, giving you full explanations. These will include the Royal Tombs, the Monastery or El Deir, as it is called in Arabic, as well as the Nymphaeum and the main street of the ancient city. During the course of your walk in Petra, there will be a stop at the restaurant for an open buffet lunch. Giving justice to Petra requires much walking so sturdy footwear is highly recommended. We return to our vehicle in the late afternoon and travel back to Aqaba arriving back at your hotel hotel after dark.
