The Forest Service and How the Public Can Get Involved

The forestry service is responsible for managing national forests and developing multiple-use forestry plans. It also provides public participation in forest management. For more information about the forestry service, see the links below. This article also addresses how the public can get involved. This article explains some of the basic functions of forestry services. After reading it, you should be better able to understand these functions. However, there are several additional aspects that you should know before getting involved with forestry services.

forestry services

The Forest Service was created in 1881 to combat the spread of diseases and to manage forests. In the early years of the service, men were assigned to work in large groups, planting trees in steppes of South Russia. In addition to planting trees, some units were also responsible for controlling phylloxera, a pest that destroys vines. Mennonite congregations provided housing and food, and the Russian government provided supervision and tools for the projects.

The Forestry Department manages more than one hundred thousand public trees in the state. These trees provide numerous benefits to citizens, including improved air and water quality, aesthetic appeal, and wildlife habitat. Shade from trees reduces cooling costs in the summer. The Forestry Department works to conserve the state's forests for future generations. As such, it is important to recognize and reward the efforts of its volunteers and forest workers. Further, the agency's annual report is designed to help landowners make informed decisions on the future of their forest.

Management of national forests

The management of national forests was once a highly contested and controversial topic. As a result, the agency tried a range of innovative approaches and blurred the distinction between public involvement and conflict resolution. These innovative approaches included negotiation and collaborative approaches to settle policy questions in public land management. This approach, in turn, led to increased public support for the agency's plans. But despite widespread public support, there was some doubt about its success.

In 1976, the National Forest Management Act, part of the U.S. Code, mandated that the forestry service consider the visual resources on USFS lands and ensure their protection. The act also required the service to inventory visual resources and assess the aesthetic effects of timber sales and other activities. In addition, a federal permit limits the agency's discretionary authority on national forest land. In short, the Act sets forth a legal framework to guide forest management on public lands.

Development of multiple-use forestry plans

Insufficient data are often an issue for strategic planning. Although complete data is useful, the plans themselves cannot be considered scientifically sound. They depend on an analysis of the current situation, trends, and public concerns. A situation audit is essential for determining actions, but incomplete information will degrade the value of the plans. Here are five ways that insufficient data reduce the value of a forest plan.

Develop an overall strategy: A plan is the goal-oriented strategy that directs the agency's actions and finances. It is an agreement between the agency and the public regarding national forest management. The plans should set the direction for budgeting and subsequent actions. In addition, the plans should be decentralized. That way, local stakeholders can have input. While this might seem complicated, it is crucial to the future of our national forests.

Public involvement in forestry services

Forestry and other governmental agencies are obligated to engage the public in planning processes before making decisions involving public lands. These decisions must be balanced between addressing public interests while protecting wildlife, clean water, backcountry areas, and recreation. Whether a plan is beneficial or harmful depends on public input, environmental review, and public input. The goal is to reduce negative impacts while meeting the same needs as before. In the public involvement process, the USFS seeks public comment on proposals before deciding which projects to pursue.

In addition to providing a historical background of public involvement in forestry services, this article examines the current state of public engagement in the US Forest Service. A review of 25 empirical studies involving forestry and public participation reveals 21 broad-defined characteristics of successful public involvement programs. These are organized according to process design traits, participant characteristics, and context. Of these characteristics, effective facilitation, active participation of agency staff, and support from agencywide policies are the most prominent. Further, the findings of the study suggest several attributes to look for when choosing facilitators.

Contributions of forestry services to U.S. economy

The contributions of forestry services to the U.S. economy vary across the states. The direct contribution to the economy was highest in New Jersey, and lowest in Wyoming. In terms of employment and compensation, the Northeast has the highest contribution per employee, while the Central Plains and Mountain West have the lowest. Understanding how these sectors employ people is critical to assessing their contributions to the economy. While there are 1.2 million people directly employed by the forest products sector, the contributions are higher in the Southeast, Midwest, and West.

In addition to supplying the US with timber and wood products, the forestry industry also contributes to the economy in other ways. Currently, over 56% of all US forests are privately owned. Forest products manufacturing and forestry services are critical to the U.S. economy, as they connect landowners to loggers and the forest industries. These companies also contribute to the local economies and state and regional economies.
