For the past century, lots of research has been devoted to developing products that ensure a sound sleep, healthy spine, and best blood flow while sleeping or in day-to-day activities.

Such developments came forth as:
- Pressure relieving materials known as "Viscoelastic open memory cells"
- Temperature regulating ones known as the "OUTLAST."

Both materials were developed by NASA, the American Space Institute, in the early 1970s, and were made known to the public in the early 1990s.
