Nacida a raíz de la experiencia de 12 años de trabajo conjunto entre 130 tejedoras mayas y la asociación francesa El Camino, compuesta por 9 diseñadoras textiles.

El Camino de Los Altos (ECLA) nait en mars 2009, fruit du travail de 130 tisseuses mayas et de l’association française El Camino. L’association mexicaine est installée à San Cristobal de las Casas (à l’Etat de Chiapas au sud du Mexique). ECLA représente un véritable outil professionnel autour du tissage sur métier à ceinture, ainsi qu’un lieu à vocation sociale et culturelle.

The non-profit association El Camino, created in 1996, is made up of nine professional designers working together to aid women weavers in five Mayan communities located on the high plains of Chiapas in the southeast of Mexico.
In March 2009, the group set up the Mexican non-profit civil association El Camino de Los Altos, which provides the weavers with a center in which to develop their professionalism, their creative and marketing skills, and to foster the transmission of the ancient art of backstrap loom weaving. The center offers support to the weavers and their families, contributes to their living conditions, and offers each of them opportunities for personal development.
In recognition of its work with women, El Camino has received awards from the following foundations: Elle, Women's Forum, Raja, and Veolia.
