General information
HM Land Registry was created in 1862 to register the ownership of land and property in England and Wales. We keep and maintain the Land Register, where more than 24 million titles – the evidence of ownership – are documented.
Once land or property is entered in the register we record any ownership changes, mortgages or leases that affect it. Anyone who suffers loss because of an error or omission in the register, or because the register needs to be corrected, will normally be compensated.
We are self-financing through the charging of fees for registration and other services. We also generate income from the sale of Add Value services.
HM Land Registry is part of the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and also a member of the Public Data Group.
