Greenwich Printmakers Gallery Company Information

General information

Greenwich Printmakers is an independent co-operative of artist-printmakers, We run our own gallery in Greenwich Market. As we all play a part in running both the gallery and the organisation, most of the membership come from in or around London. The gallery has regularly changing exhibitions of work by all GPA members, with a wall for a Featured Artist with changeover every 3 weeks. There are browsers full of unframed prints by GPA artists, and our website is www.greenwich-printmakers.co.uk. All of the prints shown by Greenwich Printmakers are original prints conceived and created by the artist according to their interests and inspirations.

We have an active programme of external exhibitions at the Affordable Art Fair, the National Theatre, the Morley Gallery, the Oxo Gallery and in Southwold in Suffolk. Individual GPA members also mount solo shows in London and further afield, and are represented at the RA Summer Exhibition and other competitive Print Exhibitions.

GPA is a vibrant and diverse group of artists who demonstrate the versatility of contemporary printmaking. The techniques available to modern artists in the field of print are wider than they have ever been. Greenwich Printmakers work in both traditional and cutting-edge methods, from etching and engraving - methods that date back to the dawn of printmaking - to screenprinting and lithography using digital photography as a source of imagery. The door is always open to explore new and innovative themes and ideas as well as respecting what has gone before. There is something about the scale and immediacy of the printed graphic image to which people respond. Only printmaking offers this diversity affordably in such a direct and compelling way

ABOUT PRINTMAKING

Relief printing involves taking an impression on paper from the surface of (usually) a plate. Many surfaces can be inscribed, most commonly wood and lino, although other materials can be used. With intaglio printing however, the ink is held in a ‘groove’ while the surface of the plate is polished. The image is then transferred from the groove onto a piece of dampened paper by passing the plate through a heavy press.

Printmaking allows the production of multiples of a given image, putting the ownership of original works of art within the reach of almost anyone. Nearly all framed prints are available in unframed versions. As editions of prints are limited, numbered and signed by the artist, prints can be shared with a restricted number of buyers. Prints known as mono-prints, are ‘one-offs’ and are unique. Edition details usually appear at the bottom of the print to the left of the artist's signature and are represented by two numbers in the form of a ‘fraction’. For example 3/50 would mean that this is the third print of an edition of fifty. A/P stands for ‘Artist's Proof’ which signifies proofs made prior to a final version and/or the number of prints from each edition kept by the artist. This dates back to the days when Master Printers did the actual printing work under the supervision of the artist. A given number of prints would be at the disposal of the artist before the edition was sold on to an art publisher or dealer.
