General information

"Cornwall Uncovered is an accumulation of stories and facts gathered from working and living in Cornwall. It is a personal response to a region that has filled me with pride and joy and I hope that the illustrations and map will add to your experience of living in, or visiting Cornwall..."

For the past year, while hidden away in his studio in the depths of the county, Simon Riordan, illustrator and designer, has been working away at a unique product that is likely to find itself on every Cornish table in the near future.

It is a richly illustrated map of Cornwall showing the wonderful tapestry of the human and natural environment that makes up this unique corner of the British Isles. Simon has already produced maps in a similar style for several local towns and realised that it was time to use his skills to put the whole of Cornwall on the map.

Simon's map explores and highlights the natural wonders of Cornwall's exceptional environment. Undoubtably Cornwall's crowning glory is the spectacular coastline, bounded on three sides by the sea and arguably the most beautiful in the world,be it rugged cliffs, sweeping dunes or the infinite variety of beaches and coves. The river estuaries of the Fal, Fowey and Camel have created wonderful waterways that stretch far inland creating unique habitats and wildlife havens. Along the backbone of Cornwall lies the granite upland areas of Bodmin Moor, Helman Tor and West Penwith - wild moorland with panoramic views to the coast beyond.

With help from Cornwall Wildlife Trust, Simon has added many examples of the flora and fauna that live here and included entertaining and moreover, useful information about enjoying the great Cornish outdoors - rock pooling, bird watching, the South west Coast path just for starters!

Not content with just one map, Simon has produced a second on the opposite side devoted to the human face of Cornwall, with illustrations and information about its rich heritage from neolithic times to the present day.Important landmarks and towns are shown with accompanying text giving a flavour of each community. Cornwall is rightly proud of its culture, from the humble cornish pasty to local art and theatre and the revival of the Cornish language. All is revealed in easily digested snippets of information within the highly illustrated map with web-links and QR codes for further exploration.

Cornwall Council Sustainability Department has backed this project as the map upholds and promotes their core values - helping Cornwall become a self-sustaining environment where both man and nature can coexist in harmony. The map encourages people to reduce their carbon footprint by using public transport, to support local businesses, buy local produce, recycle and enjoy a healthy lifestyle through active pursuits such as walking and cycling are all at the top of the agenda.
