Royal Air Force Boulmer

General information

RAF Boulmer is a key component of the RAF Battlespace Management Force and home to the Air Surveillance and Control System (ASACS).

Using ground based military and civilian radars,the Control and Reporting Centre (CRC) at RAF Boulmer is responsible for the compilation of the Recognised Air Picture (RAP), essentially a radar picture of all aircraft within the United Kingdom airspace and its approaches. The CRC monitors the RAP 24/7, 365 days a year to detect and identify all aircraft within it, and provides tactical control of the Quick Reaction Alert Typhoons at RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Coningsby, which are launched to intercept unidentified aircraft.

Also at RAF Boulmer is the RAF School of Aerospace Battle Management (SABM). The School delivers training for RAF Aerospace Battle Management officers and SNCOs, airmen/airwomen of the Aerospace Systems Manager/Operator trades as well as the wider UK Armed Forces, NATO and other foreign national military personnel. With over 600 students attending one of 120 courses a year the School is a worldwide centre of excellence providing leading edge battlespace management training and education.

Our personnel are heavily engaged in global operations and deployments in support of Defence commitments. The excellent contribution of RAF Boulmer’s personnel, both at home and abroad, provides critical support to the delivery of the RAF’s operational tasks.

The Station is located close to the picturesque market town of Alnwick in Northumberland. With beautiful countryside, a stunning coastline on our doorstep and a warm welcome from the local population, Royal Air Force Boulmer has for too long been a well-kept secret.
