General information

MAKAR is an Inverness based, architect led building company, incorporating Neil Sutherland Architects LLP, established in 2002. Since then it has built over 50 buildings (mainly houses) across Scotland.

MAKAR is an old Scots word representing : creativity, quality and workmanship – characteristics at the heart of the company’s ethos.

The company combines building design, manufacturing and construction in a highly integrated way in contrast to the fragmented, inefficient approach of most UK builders. The same team is involved from initial project discussions and concept design through to handing over the house keys.

MAKAR’s focus is on the use of timber as the main construction material. Timber is the most renewable or sustainable of building materials and MAKAR has developed design and manufacturing solutions which maximise the use of timber, especially Scottish and other UK grown timber. The company’s ecological approach also avoids the use of chemicals and toxins, which helps to create houses (and other buildings) with both healthy internal and external environments. MAKAR’s approach helps to address wider environmental concerns; and promote and support sustainable development.

The company aims to design and create houses which sit well in the landscape and which contribute positively to their surroundings.

MAKAR offers a range of services to customers including full design and build, and full design and build to wind and watertight stage. Each package is tailored or customised to meet the specific needs of our customers.
