General information

DTRIC was established in 1992 at a time when most insurers were reluctant to offer automobile coverage in Hawaii due to rising claims costs and strict regulations created by the state’s no-fault law. With creative programs and solutions, DTRIC stepped in to replace a major insurer who canceled the group automobile program for the state’s largest public employee union.

In 1994, DTRIC expanded into commercial insurance lines in response to a severe downturn in the availability of general casualty and workers compensation insurance in Hawaii. DTRIC provides workers compensation coverage to many Hawaii businesses and works closely with clients on operational and safety issues. DTRIC has been instrumental in bringing stability to the local marketplace and reducing insurance costs.

In April 2001, DTRIC’s majority owner, Dai-Tokyo Fire & Marine Insurance Company, Limited, merged with Chiyoda Fire & Marine Insurance Company, Limited to form a new company called Aioi Insurance Company, Limited, one of the largest property and casualty insurers in Japan. Aioi Insurance Company joined Royal State Group as DTRIC's owners. That same year in July, DTRIC unveiled its new legal name, DTRIC Insurance Company, Limited.

On October 1, 2010, Aioi Insurance Company, Limited and Nissay Dowa General Insurance Company, Limited merged and formed Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance Company, Limited. Aioi Nissay Dowa and Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company, Limited are subsidiaries of MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings, Inc., the largest non-life insurer in Japan and the seventh largest in the world.
