General information

At The Community Training & Development Centre the focus of our activities and services fall under the following three categories:

Community Training, Community Development, and Community Innovation & Improvement.

Read below for a summary of the Programs/Services we offer:

TRAINING:

Personal Support Worker:
* PSW is an 8 month accredited training program offered in Peterborough and Lindsay. Programs begin in the fall and winter. Class size is limited to 24.

Food Service Worker:
* Food Services is a 7-week training program offered jointly by ‘One Roof', the City of Peterborough Department of Social Services and the CTDC. Class size is limited to 6 participants who learn culinary skills while preparing meals for up to 175 people per day. A variation on this program may also be available in Northumberland.

Goals, Pathways, Success (GPS):
* GPS is a unique tiered program offered in partnership with the County of Northumberland Department of Social Services. Class size is limited to 15 participants. There may be up to three groups per year. Participants explore local career opportunities and network with local employers. Those who are employment ready will be placed with a local employer. Job related certification such as CPR and First Aid, WHIMIS and Safe Food Handling are included. CTDC was the recipient of the 2016 Gold (North America) Global Best Award.

Driver Education:
* This program is provided to KPRDSB student ages 16+. The program is one week in-class (20 hours) plus in-car driving education.

Confident Women:
* This program is a 6-week, 3 day per week program for women in the Cobourg and Northumberland Area. This program is provided in partnership with the County of Northumberland. The class size is limited to 15. Participants learn the language, postures and actions of confidence as they move toward employment.

Financial Literacy Training:
* This program was offered in Northumberland and Peterborough and provided residents with mentors to assist in understanding the key components of financial literacy (over 700 residents received this training).

DEVELOPMENT:

Career Development for Youth in Northumberland:
* This project focuses on the growth within careers related to the expansion of the aging demographic. This aging cohort is expected to grow over the next 30 years. The project will identify current careers, as well as projected future careers. This information will assist youth in making career and training choices allowing them to live and work in Northumberland.

Career Development for Mature Workers:
* A project that assists mature workers in understanding the use of networking as an effective tool in their local employment search. Networking is not only an effective job search strategy, it is also a skill required to connect with lifelong career opportunities and for social engagement.

Career Development in the PSW health care sector:
* The Personal Support Worker employment sector study is to assess recruitment, retention, and training needs of employers and employees in this sector.

Intergenerational Development:
* This project identifies the skills and knowledge of community seniors. The information can benefit the community through mentoring, succession planning and career development for youth.

Financial Literacy Project:
* Was offered in Northumberland and Peterborough and provided over 700 students with professional mentors to assist in understanding the key components of financial literacy.

INNOVATION & IMPROVEMENT:

Youth Employment:
* Knowledge Based on the Growth of the Senior Population. This project is developed in co-operation with Western University’s Sam Katz Community Health and Aging Research Unit. This project identifies current careers and forecasts future careers based on the growth of goods and services required by seniors over the next 30 years.

MyHomeWorks:
* A web site designed to help students, teachers and parents explore the local labour market in Northumberland, Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton. Future trends and disruptors are considered as the users predict which jobs will be growing and which will decline. In addition the users will learn job search strategies and also details on local employment opportunities.

Employment Competencies:
* Competencies describe the skills required to do a job. These skills may be the “soft skills”, the academic, or the technical skills required. This project develops a competency training model for children, youth and adults.

Newcomer Supports in Language & Job Search Strategies:
* This project in collaboration with Northumberland County, develops language curriculum based on the use of food in meal preparation.
In addition, Northumberland Newcomer Radio delivered job search strategies and tips throughout their daily programming.

Open Minds Northumberland:
* A project in partnership with Northumberland County Economic Development that focused on providing grade 7 & 8 students an opportunity to spend a week fully engaged in the agricultural industry. Open Minds Northumberland was recognized as an innovative program by Ontario Economic Development (recipient of Award of Merit).
