Eden Care Communities is Regina’s leading integrated and intergenerational housing and healthcare organization operating world-class seniors, adult and childcare facilities and programs. Eden Care Communities operates the Regina Lutheran Home, Broadway Terrace, Milton Heights, Saplings Early Learning Child Care Center, Eden Care at Home, The Community Day and Wellness Center and Eden Suites.

Using the Eden AlternativeTM philosophy of care in all their homes and services, Eden Care Communities encourages those we care for and their care partners (including employees and families) to work together for the best possible decisions for each individual.

Eden Care Communities understands that the best care practices are not only person centered but also person directed which is why we give those we care for every opportunity to participate in their own care and making decisions on how they live their lives.

History

Launched in the 1950’s, Eden Care Communities was first established as the Regina Lutheran Housing Corporation following a study which highlighted the need for a retirement home for the aged. Launched by members of the Lutheran community, this independent organization began with the belief that caring for community members in need best reflected the foundational beliefs of the church.

Initially three separate units were built as part of the original facility, named Regina Lutheran Home. One unit accommodated 28 single rooms with a common dining area for those requiring minimal assistance. The second unit provided independent living with 17 bachelor suites, and the third unit provided 8 one bedroom independent suites for couples. The first residents moved in at the end of 1964.

Planning for a facility that could offer long-term nursing care began in 1970 and by August of 1978 the Regina Lutheran Home had added 52 new spaces in a 4th wing (not sure I’d use the term wing…they were called units prior to the implementation of Eden) for residents with higher care needs. By 1985 the facility had added rooms for another 11 people, and had renovated its original 28 single rooms to allow for residents with increased care needs.
Continuing with the commitment to serve the needs of the community, The Regina Lutheran Care Society (RLCS) was created to conduct a study, the results of which identified a need for assisted living accommodations for seniors. A building committee was established to plan for the building of Broadway Terrace which opened its doors in 2004.

Our third facility was acquired in 2002 at the same time as RLCS purchased the lot upon which to build Broadway Terrace. At that time it was known as Tower Gardens Apartments built in 1955 on the lot adjacent to Broadway Terrace. Through a partnership with Saskatchewan Housing, CMHC and Eden Care Communities, Milton Heights (renamed for Graham Milton) underwent a $20 M total rejuvenation project and in 2012 became home to 175 Regina citizens.

In 2006 the organization was introduced to the Eden Alternative which was unanimously adopted by the organization. In 2011 the Regina Lutheran Care Society changed its name to Eden Care Communities to reflect its commitment to this way of caring.

Over the past years, our organization has embraced its integrated approach and offers services for seniors that are still residing in their own home. Eden Care At Home brings the philosophy to seniors across the community. Launched officially in January of 2016 Eden at Home offers home care services for seniors, including personal care, housekeeping, companionship and nursing services. It’s this outreach that creates the interconnectivity Eden Care believes in. We strive to be the organization that touches you when you or your family needs it. Our community outreach gets us out into the community helping the people that need it most.

Eden Care Communities recognizes the importance of bridging generations. We are a big believer in intergenerational care. In October 2016 Eden Care Communities opened its doors to Saplings Early Learning Centre, near the original Lutheran Home. Saplings Early Learning Centre offers affordable care to children from 18-months to six years. Like the senior care approach, Saplings collaborates with family members, Saplings educators and each child. The goal is to ensure that every child will engage in open-ended exploration with the ability to act independently, embrace their growing abilities, and communicate with confidence and creativity. We connect Saplings with the Regina Lutheran Home to build on generational gaps and build remarkable relationship between generations.

Launched in January 2016, we launched our newest program. The Community Day & Wellness Program provides recreational and social activities for people with disabilities, and provides respite services for their caregivers. The program offers opportunities to be engaged in recreation and leisure activities, group discussions, outings etc.

Eden Care is also looking to the future, and we have big plans. There is still a need for quality, safe, affordable senior housing in Regina. Our sights are set on a new facility on Broad Street, near Imperial School. The new build will incorporate many amenities, including a doctor’s office, pharmacy and daycare centre. We will be able to provide easy access to health and wellness services for residents, and connect out residents with our younger generation and improve the community as a whole.
