INTRODUCTION TO SLINGSHOT™

The open-air cockpit of the Slingshot™ provides a 360-degree rush of sight, sound and smell. Both driver and passenger experience a front-row shot of adrenalin. Sitting just millimetres above the road, you can feel the rush of the asphalt under your seat. With a wide stance and sport-tuned suspension Slingshot makes every corner exciting, while its light weight and punchy performance offer heart-pounding acceleration.

PRODUCT FEATURES

• CORNERS LIKE…it’s on rails. Its wide stance and sport tuned suspension makes you want to charge every corner and never let off.

• QUICK ACCELERATION…light and powerful, making for heart-pounding acceleration. Just punch it and you’re there.

• SHARED EXPERIENCE…both driver and passenger get a front-row shot of adrenalin.

TECHNICAL CONCEPT

Slingshot™ is powered by a 2.4 litre dual-overhead cam engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. It features a high-strength steel space frame, a lightweight aluminium swingarm and a carbon fibre reinforced drive belt.

With a dry weight of less than 770kg, a very low centre of gravity, and an engine that produces 173 horsepower, Slingshot delivers heart pounding acceleration and astonishing cornering ability. Slingshot has advanced motorcycle features such as electronic stability and traction control, 3-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, LED taillights, forged aluminium roll hoops, 3-point seat belts 18”-20” tyres with forged aluminum wheels, media console.

CHASSIS & DYNAMICS

Slingshot’s chassis was developed thanks to the vast experience at Polaris with ORV (off-road vehicles). Featuring a low-weight, high-strength frame-based chassis, Slingshot is made from the thinnest tubes ever welded at the Spirit Lake facility.

The dimensions for Slingshot were determined by a number of important factors.

European regulations helped decide overall width / track, with Slingshot’s overall width (at 1971mm) only slightly less than the maximum permitted on European roads. This track dimension provides the best stability possible.

The final wheelbase dimension for Slingshot came from extensive testing and benchmarking against other products. The final and overall wheelbase (at 2667mm) was decided upon to give the ideal balance of stability and manouverability.

Polaris engineers worked tirelessly for optimised weight distribution. Unique factors and challenges are presented with a three-wheel vehicle design, but engineers set themselves a tough challenge, pinpointing an exact location in the centre of the vehicle, where the centre of mass should remain loaded or unloaded. The challenge was realised, giving Slingshot exceptional weight distribution for a three-wheel vehicle.
Thanks to the great achievements in chassis strength due to Slingshot’s low-weight, high-strength frame, engineers were able to develop a single-sided, aluminium swingarm, with exceptional rigidity, allowing for much easier tyre changes.

SUSPENSION

Three-wheel vehicles offer a unique set of challenges for chassis and ride control. Polaris engineers took these challenges head-on, with a desire to create the best-handling three-wheeler on the market.

With roll-stiffness the biggest challenge on a three-wheeler such as Slingshot, the team worked hard to find a set-up that worked better than ever before. The desire to minimise body roll and therefore resulting negative camber on the rear wheel was achieved by a high quality, double wishbone suspension set-up, combined with a stiff, large front anti-roll bar.

Polaris selected sport tuned, coil over gas-filled shock absorbers to give Slingshot a truly sport-influenced feel.

FINAL DRIVE

To maintain Slingshot’s chassis control and handling characters, engineers benchmarked final drive solutions across the industry. Following this process, engineers learned that vehicle squat under acceleration was a major contributing factor to unpredictable handling in similar chassis layouts, and therefore set upon a challenge to eradicate this potential from Slingshot.

Following a lengthy exploratory process both in the workshop and on test tracks, engineers selected a belt final drive for Slingshot due to its anti-squat advantages, while offering significant weight savings too.

For this reason, Slingshot delivers its power to the road via a carbon reinforced drive belt.

ENGINE

Engine selection was not only crucial for the performance of Slingshot, but also played a vital role in mass centralisation.

Polaris engineers selected a variable valve timed 2.4 litre four cylinder, double overhead cam engine from General Motors due to its comparatively lightweight attributes and compact dimensions. Sitting low in the chassis its selection aided overall vehicle dynamics thanks to its relatively low weight, but impressive power and torque figures – namely 173bhp and 227 Nm. Engine performance is further aided by a short header exhaust system.

Details:
Displacement: 2384cc
Bore & Stroke: 88mm x 89mm
Compression Ratio: 10.4:1
Valve Train: DOHC VVT
Power: 173BHP & 6,400rpm
Torque: 227 Nm @4,700rpm

GEARBOX

To maintain its sport-focused intentions, there was never any other choice than a manual gearbox for Slingshot. A five-speed H-pattern gearbox was selected, before being specifically engineered to sit as low as possible in Slingshot’s chassis, again aiding dynamics and chassis control

BRAKING

As was the case in many areas of Slingshot development, due to its unconventional design, braking posed a unique challenge too. During the mass optimisation process, Polaris engineers found that every wheel is subjected to virtually the same forces, whether at the front or rear of the vehicle.

For this reason, Slingshot is fitted with 298mm cast iron vented rotors all round, controlled by a unique non-servo assisted master cylinder set-up giving exceptional, linear feel more akin to that of a race car. ABS comes as standard.

STEERING

Slingshot is equipped with a rack and pinion set-up, aided by the electronic Polaris EPAS speed sensitive powered assistance system.

A fast 3.2 turns from lock to lock, provides a sporty, race-inspired feel to Slingshot.

HANDLING CONTROL

Striving to maintain the true, raw feel of Slingshot, engineers worked tirelessly to deliver an analogue feel to its electronics. For this reason, Slingshot features Electronic Stability & Traction Control that doesn’t get in the way of fun. Slingshot’s electronics system will only intervene under extreme circumstances.

Slingshot comes to Europe with premium 18-inch forged aluminium front wheels and a 20-inch forged aluminium rear wheel.

INTERIOR

Slingshot was engineered from the ground-up to fit a wide-range of driver and passenger shapes and sizes. With adjustable seating and three-point seatbelts, tilt adjustable steering and generous, yet secure race-styled waterproof seats, Slingshot offers a sporty but comfortable cockpit.

Included as standard is a 4.3-inch LCD media console, which features Bluetooth integration, USB input, 6-speaker audio system and a reversing camera. Lockable storage compartments (for helmets of other large items) are positioned to the rear of seats, with a lockable glove box too.

ERGONOMICS

Polymer body panels allow Slingshot to maintain its chassis-hugging profile. Lightweight and durable, the uniquely designed bodywork allows easy customisation to the look of Slingshot.

Servicing of Slingshot is made easy by its reverse-tilt bonnet, allowing simple access to its 2.4litre engine.

Night riding is aided by powerful projector-beam headlights and LED taillights.
