Sea Cadets Isle of Man Company Information

General information

Winter Program

The winter training program is split up into core training and specialisation and proficiency training. Core training takes place during parade nights, while specialisation and proficiency training is taught either on parade nights or as a weekend course.

The core modules make up the basis of all cadet training, and completing these allows a cadet to advance through the rates. Cadets cover drill, basic seamanship, corps knowledge, leadership & teamwork, first aid, adventure training and meteorology among others.

There is a variety of different specialisations and proficiencies that cadets can work towards. These include first aid, catering, marine engineering and adventure training.

Summer Program

The summer program normally starts at the beginning of May, with cadets learning basic sea safety and helping to make sure that the boats and other equipment is ready. Weather dependent, cadets are out on the water as soon as possible after the TT holidays.

Cadets have the opportunity to try dinghy sailing, pulling (rowing) and power-boating. The instructors in the unit are qualified to test the cadets for RYA Level 1 and Level 2 for both dinghy sailing and power-boating. In the past we have also run courses for kayaking.

As well as the sailing, we aim to run at least 3 senior and 1 junior camp every summer. While on camp the cadets may take part in orienteering exercises, wide games and adventure training in one of the Island's plantations, team building exercises, sailing, camp cooking and many more. During the summer of 2012 we held a week long camp in Ireland, a fantastic experience enjoyed by all who attended.

Offshore Opportunities

Cadets also have the opportunity to go away on one of the Sea Cadet vessels, including the Sea Cadet flagship TS Royalist, a 29m brig, the power vessels TS John Jerwood and TS Jack Petchey, and the yachts TS Vigilant and TS City Liveryman.

Duke of Edinburgh

In addition to normal cadet activities, cadets over 14 are able to work towards their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award within the unit. This is done on a separate night to ensure that cadets still get the most out of the cadet training. Map work, camp cooking and other expedition training are covered in more detail than in the core adventure training modules. Cadets under 14 are also able to attend, to work towards their cadet AT proficiency.
