Good Wood was founded in 1980 by Dave Murphy after he became disenchanted with all the traveling required as a sales representative for an Agricultural chemical company

First established as a wooden toy factory, Good Wood soon adapted to making wooden turnings for the toy and crafts industry such as toy wheels, shaker pegs and smokestacks. We also became involved in making toy kits for many wholesale mail order catalogs. As the company grew and expanded its line of products, we built a new factory in 1986 with additional room for growth.

As the 1990’s came upon us, we added machinery to make wooden dowels and other shaped parts. We built five more buildings at this time as well; two were additional warehouse space, two were for new dry kilns to dry our lumber and one was for the addition of our saw mill. We felt like we needed to be completely integrated to control the grade, moisture and quality of the lumber that was coming through our plant. We continued to upgrade our turning equipment with the addition of 6 hopper fed automatic lathes in the late 1990’s to increase production and decrease overhead expenses on labor as well as eliminate the loss of defective parts during production.

With this additional capacity and space we sought out business from the furniture industry. There were many requests for wooden knobs at this time so we bought a large building in an adjacent town and added spray and tumble finishing capacity. We added the other complimentary machinery at this same time such as machinery to install 8/32 brass inserts in wooden knobs as well as sanding capacity to make this a “one stop shop” for our customers.

As time progressed we continued to make the toy and craft parts, furniture knobs and legs, game calls and many other turnings for the display and OEM industries.

In about 1999, we decided to see what this whole import craze was about. Our original intentions were mostly one of curiosity but we soon found that there was a legitimate need for these items from some of our customers. As a result of our first exploration of off shore suppliers we have become very active in the import side of business thru many partner companies in Asia, China and Russia. We have very good relationships with these companies and they have proven themselves to have excellent quality on their wood parts and dowels.

We also continue to make wood turnings and dowels in our factory in Ohio for quick turnaround and for customers that don’t want imports. We continue to finish wood components in our Flushing, Ohio factory to assure safe finishes for our customers.
