General information

The birth of the Akehurst’s Flying A Brand was established in 1951 when Don and Barbara Akehurst purchased their first Quarter Horse Mare from Lemon Ranch in Hardin, Montana. Her name was Nona (AQHA Registered #103258).

Over the years, the number of mares have become too numerous to list, but the breeding heritage still remains in the Ranch’s current band of broad mares.

Don started in the cattle and horse industry about the same time. Doubling as a rancher and rodeo cowboy, he always needed horses that could perform. With rodeo success, Don continued investing in good performance horses and ranch horses for working cattle in, and out-side the arena. At age 8, Don’s son Greg began helping with the Ranch horses, cattle and competing in Junior Rodeo Break-away Roping, which was the spark for a lifetime love of horses. The Akehursts have now expanded the family business with the grass-fed beef program.
