Since 1999 Davis Comfort Systems has provided residential & light commercial project consultations, design, sales, installation and service of HVAC heating, ventilation and air conditioning for all of the Mankato and surrounding areas. Chuck Maxfield said he applied for the program because of the prospect of lugging several window units upstairs at his house on South Minnesota Avenue. Maxfield, who deployed twice to Iraq in five years, said the supplied air conditioning unit "draws a lot of moisture out. It provides relief in those afternoons when you just step outside and start to sweat." Mankato Trane dealer Davis Comfort Systems used the "Give Back to A Vet Program" from its supplier Gustave A. Larson for the unit. Davis; BLK Electric, North Mankato, and The Concrete Cutter, Le Sueur, donated labor. Maxfield, a native of Cleveland-St. Peter area, said he's working on a degree in communications at Gustavus Adolphus College through a Yellow Ribbon program. He joined the U.S. Army after he graduated from high school in 2002. "I knew I was not ready for continuing education," he said. "I joined the service to see what's out here." After infantry and anti-tank weapon system Javelin training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he asked for a stateside placement. But he was sent to Korea for more than a year and found "a culture I never would have known otherwise." He was then stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and deployed twice to Iraq. He extended for two years to "go over with my guys" a second time. The air conditioning project was no straight-forward hookup. Maxfield owns the Henry A. Swift House, which dates from 1858 and has stone walls that are 18 inches thick or more. "I was worried about getting through the walls," he said. Davis chose a ductless mini-split unit, so wall or ceiling-mounted units inside connect with the exterior unit only through a small conduit. The company decided to participate in the program and reached out to local veterans services officers. Nathan Tish, Nicollet County veterans services officer, told Maxfield. He applied by writing a letter. Tom Davis, general manager of Davis Comfort Systems, said it was the program's first year and he hopes it is repeated. Maxfield stood out because "the letter was good and in-depth about how it would help him," Davis said. "It was a pleasure to pick someone out."
